Police Lay Off in New Jersey

If you have watched news recently, you will have no difficulties to find out there is a lot of debate regarding mass of police lay off in New Jersey, Newark and Carmden. I am very upset with the result of Newark lay off 167 police after the mayor office and the union could not reach agreement. Camden also receives the permission to lay off half of the staffs. I know it is a tough economic time, and we face huge deficits. But we also need to consider the reason to have polices around us is to ensure public civilian can have normal and safety life. As public servant, the main goal is to serve public civilian better. There is no right or wrong answer here, but whatever decision should not put public civilian in danger. The negotiation always fails because both side of party try to maximum their own profits, but not public civilian benefits. According to the updated news from Channel 7 on Friday night, New Jersey Mayor, Jerramiah T. Healy decides to hold on the proposal of layoff nearly 90 officers to Trenton for approval in order to give Union more time to think about the 2 concessions that Mayor suggests. It is the fact that there is a huge deficit, but is the lay off the only answer to the problem? I think the suggestion that Mayor Healy makes is not a bad idea at all in order to avoid layoff: A week's pay lag, which officers would get back when they retire; and give up one year uniform allowance If the agreement can reachable, then city can solve the huge deficit problem, and union can protect their member from being layoff, the public civilian safety won’t be in danger. It is a win win solution. Why not?  What do you think?

  1. I agree that these layoffs should not take place, the public will be put in danger with all the crime that goes on in these areas. There should be another way for unions to come to terms and agree on a win/win solution. Mayor Healy should enforce his suggestions until a compromise can be made with the unions.
