Management Tip of the Day: Change how you follow

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6AP30Q20101203

I just noticed that Rueters provides daily management tips.

Friday's management tip was, "change the way you follow".  This tip refers to an employee's inability to change his/her boss' poor leadership style. Since an employee cannot change his/her boss' leadership style, it's suggested that the employee focus on the thing(s) that he/she can change, which is how he/she follows.

This is reflective of our classroom discussions on self-reflection and looking inward to change our behaviors and motivate ourselves.

  1. Deanne,

Thanks for letting us know about the daily management tips. I, however, find this tip somewhat incomplete. Remember our discussions during the review of the human resources frame. Motivation and motivating factors were mentioned during the class discussions. I say this tip is incomplete because it does not present any actual methods as to how we can go about finding this inner inspiration. The article says we should try finding it in the work itself or in our colleagues. But Victoria presentation last week and Angie's presentation the week before offer a stark example of where this tip would be very difficult to carry out. Angie mentioned being under appreciated and Victoria mentioned being left out of the loop when her people were fired and how the office had an air of depression. I guess my question would be, how do we find inspiration within when its only a job and we have little or no contact with our colleagues?

  2. Mike,

Keep in mind that this is just a tip. It's like when then say "don't do drugs", they don't tell you how to stay away from it, they just tell you not to do it :-) I'm kidding, well, kind of. I understand what you're saying. If you look at it from the human resources frame, and you think about everything that goes into self motivation, etc., the tip does appear to be incomplete because it doesn't provide any guidance. However, again, it's just a tip. It's something quick that was put out there with the hopes that at least a couple people will find it useful.

To answer your question, I think a lot of times you need to look within yourself if you can't depend on those around you. If you look within yourself and you can't pull from anything to inspire you in your current job, then you need to change your situation. Of course, this is not ideal in our current economic times, but you would need to find some external force to motivate you.
